Donald R. Sloan passed away on August 17, 2013. He was born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1933. He graduated from Drake University in 1955 with a B.S. in accounting. He joined Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. (now KPMG) in Kansas City. He became a partner in the firm in 1965 and moved to Des Moines in 1968 as managing partner of that office. He returned to Kansas City in 1972 as managing partner of that office. He moved to New York City in 1977 as managing partner of that office and in 1979 was elected Deputy Chairman and Chief Operating Partner. He retired from the firm in 1985. While with the firm he was a member of the Advisory Committee and Chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee. He was a member of PMI International and served on its Advisory Committee and Long Range Planning Committee.
In the communities he lived he was active in civic affairs. He was Chairman of United Way and the Philharmonic in Des Moines, Iowa. He was also Chairman of United Way and The Symphony in Kansas City. In New York, he was a member of the Board of the New York Philharmonic and of the "I Love New York" Committee. He returned to Kansas City in 1985. Over the years he devoted much of his time and attention to the Youth Volunteer Corps, of which he was Chairman for several years.
During his early years in Kansas City, he was active in the Republican Party as Chairman of the Overland Park Republican Committee, as an Alternate Delegate to the Republican National Convention in San Francisco in 1964 and as a Delegate to the Republican National Convention in Miami in 1968.
He always had a love of sports, mostly as a spectator. However, he did love to play golf until back problems forced him to give play up in 2001. He continued to play gin rummy and some bridge and he will dearly miss the generosity of his gin rummy partners!
Don and Jean had the privilege of traveling to many cities in the United States and several countries throughout the world, often with their children, such as all of the British Isles, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Switzerland, China, Japan, Singapore and Australia.
He leaves behind his dearly beloved partner and wife, Jean, of 60 years, two wonderful daughters, Kathleen and Julie, and three outstanding grandchildren, Elizabeth, Kyle and Madeline.
Don had a loving wife, wonderful children and grandchildren, and a great career! It was a wonderful life!
Memorial services will be held at Country Club United Methodist Church, 400 W. 57th St., Kansas City, MO. on Friday, September 13, 2013 4:00 p.m.
