Mr. Donald Yerke

Donald Wyman (Don) Yerke passed away on Sunday, July 5, 2009. He was born March 19, 1918 in Elkhart, Indiana and is survived by his wife of 68 years, Myrtle. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Fern Yerke and sister, Dorothy LaPrairie. He leaves two daughters, Sandy Imperatori (Chuck) of Fairfield, California and Suzi Reecht (Mike) of Leawood, Kansas; 3 grandchildren, Curt Newborn, Chris Reecht, and Carrie Votypka; and 3 great granddaughters.
Don spent a 40+ year career with Western Electric, which included assignments in Alaska, New York, Cleveland, Ohio, Evansville, Indiana, Indianapolis, Indiana, St. Louis, Missouri, and Kansas City where he was General Manager. He was a Marine veteran in WWII. Don was an avid golfer, sailor, and amateur carpenter. He was Commander of the Kansas City Coast Guard Auxiliary Chapter. A golf tournament that he began in 1977 still carries his name, “Yerke Classic”, that is held annually at Lake Valley Golf Club in Camdenton, Missouri. He and his wife, Myrt, spent summers in Suttons Bay, Michigan.
He was truly a man of many talents and will be missed by his family and many friends.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, July 9, 2009 at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS, followed by entombment at Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens, K-7 Highway and 75th Street. Visitation will be from 6-8 P.M., Wednesday, July 8, 2009 also at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the American Heart Association, 6800 W. 93rd St., Overland Park, Kansas 66212.
