On the morning of September 4, 2016 at 4:55 a.m., Donna passed away peacefully in the comfort of her loving husband’s arms at their home as a result of terminal liver cancer. Donna was 75 years old, born August 19, 1941 in Kansas City, KS. She was passionate and caring about her family and others throughout her life. She shined on every life she touched. She married Bill McAvoy in 1959 and they were blessed with four children by 1965. She was active in volunteer work to support the development of her children’s education and interests. She worked at Shawnee Mission Medical Center as a volunteer, owned and operated Davis Paints in Overland Park for three years, was a bridal consultant for over 10 years, and most recently retired after 28 years as co-owner with her husband, Bill, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Gloria Yerkes from M-Y Foods. Donna’s spirit was attractive to whomever crossed her path—she was described as selfless, classy, and amazing—truly one of a kind! Donna was a woman of faith and an active member of Legacy Christian Church for over 40 years. She was a devoted and loving wife, a loving and caring mother, an honored and adored grandmother, and a trusted friend. She instilled values in her family that are the essence of a beautiful, purposeful life of love. Donna’s beautiful smile and presence will be missed by everyone.
Donna was preceded in death by her son, Steven McAvoy, and her parents, Luther and Lucille Sportsman. She is survived by: her husband, Bill McAvoy; sons: William McAvoy and Gregory McAvoy; daughter, Kristi (Mark) Cann; grandsons Scott McAvoy and Nic Cann; granddaughter, Madison McAvoy; and sister, Charlene Cassity, who are celebrating the gift of Donna’s life!
