Warm Memories
Due to that day in age with the need to keep her warm due to her premature birth, her mother did the best she could by placing her near their oven, she was a fighter even then. Her mother told many stories of Doris growing up. One of the amusing ones was one of her sleep walking adventures where she decided to take the dogs and go hunting. “Oh, she did make it back okay”, Grandma said, “but didn’t bring back any game”.
Another humorous life story to share is while the older brothers, Dan and Jim were at school Doris was home with the youngest of the family, Mary and Ron. After stepping outside for a moment she got locked out of the house with Mary and Ron inside. After attempting to talk Mary through opening the door for her she ended up asking the neighbors to call her husband who was a Detective with Johnson County Sheriff’s Dept. Our father had to send an officer with his key to unlock the door. A sign of the times was this little happening made the small Shawnee Village community paper which embarrassed both her and her husband and since Ron was a newborn we all can figure out who locked her out .
Doris loved being a mother and she loved Christmas. Some of her children’s fondest and warm memories growing up were of Christmas morning. Later we knew this took some clever planning on her part. In early years our family present wrapping plan was to take the children to their Grandmother’s Christmas eve so she could wrap presents to give them their Christmas morning surprise. As the years went on and her children grew, she would find excellent hiding places for presents that due to clever children needed to evolve. Closet space offered good hiding until it was discovered, then she moved onto under the dirty laundry and eventually in the car trunk. Christmas was such a wonderful family time and it was because of her.
Flowers and cards are welcome or donate to your local children fund, Doris loved children.
