Dorothea Louise Thomas Dickey: December 8, 2020.
We write in tribute to our beloved mother. A cherished family member and treasured friend. In a life that spanned 93 years, she grew into a strong individual with the bravery to face and overcome loss, disappointment, and disease, with grace and character. And she did it with a welcoming smile on her face and an honest interest in every person she encountered in life.
Born in Pittsburg, KS, on April 14, 1927, resident of Kansas City for the last 66 years, mother of two, grandmother to one, sister and cousin and aunt, room mother to hundreds, adored by thousands She was known by many names – Dottie, Dottsie, Dottie Lou, DL, Dirty Lou, .E, Dahlu, Mamma D, and others – by lifelong friends and family. A woman of simple needs, she traveled the world and surrounded herself with people who became instant fans. Her birthdays lasted a month as everyone had to take her to lunch. She loved to sing and dance, was a great piano player, and loved words, word games and crosswords.
She was a proud KU Chi Omega and proud Jayhawk. She volunteered for 25 years at Children’s Mercy Hospital, belonged to many organizations and received honors too numerous to list. She was involved in her world. Injuries and illnesses took her from us too soon.
Her beaming smile, her wisdom and advice, her concern and caring, her humor and joy, will be missed by all. Her courage and common sense were a rock for her children. She was irreplaceable, an angel of the first degree.
Internment at Johnson County Memorial Gardens. The family hopes to have a public gathering in her memory in 2021.
No flowers, please. The family recommends gifts to Children’s Mercy Hospital.
