Dorothy Kessler Bucher, 87, of Overland Park, KS, passed away December 3, 2014. Dorothy was born January 2, 1927, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Edward F. and Nellie M. (Booth) Kessler. The family moved to Tarrant, Alabama, when she was 5 years old. After graduating from high school in Tarrant, Dorothy attended the University of Alabama for 2 years. She transferred to Baker University for her remaining 2 years of college where she received her degree in Home Economics and Education and was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. At Baker she met her husband to be, Bill, and they married August 8, 1948, following their graduation from Baker and were married for 65 years until his recent death in May 2014. Dorothy has 3 grateful children, Michele and twins, Bill and Denise. She has 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Dorothy worked at her father’s drugstore while in high school and worked assembling televisions for RCA in Indiana while Bill was earning his masters degree at Indiana University. After moving to Kansas City, Dorothy raised her three children and later worked at the Jones Store and Glidden Paint as well as a substitute teacher in the Shawnee Mission School District for junior and senior high classes. Her best work, however, was as a dedicated and loving wife and mother, making the home a sanctuary of nurturing encouragement.
Following Bill and Dorothy’s retirement, they expanded their love of travel and camping by buying a motor home and traveled to 47 states making friends with other RV travelers along the way. Dorothy had lived at Rose Estates for almost 3 years and always had a smile to share with others.
Dorothy is survived by three children, daughters Michele Gunnoe and husband Robert, Overland Park, KS, and Denise M. Carnright and husband Ronald, Phelps, NY, and son William E. Bucher and wife Teri, Olathe, KS; six grandchildren, Jen M. Piper, Penfield, NY; Ryan W. Bucher and wife Aubrey, Olathe, KS; Jared P. Bucher and wife Alexis, Olathe, KS; Allison M. Gunnoe, Lawrence, KS; Caleb E. Bucher and wife Amanda, Lawrence, KS; Michael E. Gunnoe, Overland Park, KS; Anna L. Bucher, Olathe, KS; three great grandchildren, Mirabel, Gideon, and Ada Bucher.
The family of Dorothy will receive guests from 9:3o until 10 o’clock in the morning on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Johnson County Funeral Chapel and Memorial Gardens 11200 Metcalf Ave. Overland Park, KS 66210 immediately followed by a service at 10 and burial in Johnson County Memorial Gardens.
