Ms. Dorothy Dolen

Dorothy E. Dolen, age 91, of Leawood, KS passed away on August 18, 2011. She was born on March 10, 1920 in KC, MO the daughter of Jual (Thompson) and Frank Snyder. She graduated from Central High School in KC, MO and later married John Smith in 1940. Dorothy joined John in San Antonio, TX in the armed services in WWII. In 1946, they returned to build their family home in Leawood, KS where they raised their three children. Dorothy was a stay at home mother who also enjoyed her club affiliations, golf and travel and their second home in the Ozarks. Her cooking skills were legendary.
In 1980, Dorothy married Virgil Dolen and they enjoyed 20 years together, both in Sarasota, FL and Leawood, KS before Virgil passed away in 2000.
Dorothy was famous for her kind and generous ways. She had an amazing sense of humor that could catch you very off guard. She loved being with friends and family and her enthusiasm for people had been revived in recent weeks as she made many new friends in her home at Heritage Communities. Her family thanks them for showing her so much love.
Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Wells of Leawood, KS; sons Randy Smith of KC, MO and Rick Smith (Sherri) of KC, MO; 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
Funeral Services will be held at 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS. Visitation will be held one hour prior. Interment will be held in the Johnson County Indoor Courtyard of Memories. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3846 West 75th St, Prairie Village, KS 66208.
