Douglas Henry Garbig, 56, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 24, 2018. Doug finished his fight against gastric cancer surrounded by family in Wichita, Kansas. Doug was born in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada on July 8, 1961, to John “Jack” and Helen (Eakins) Garbig.
Doug grew up in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada with his parents, siblings and his beloved Irish grandmother, “Nanny”. He attended Sheridan Park grade school, Homelands junior high, and Erindale high school, where he was active playing baseball in the summertime and hockey in the winter. The hockey puck dents he, Ken and their friends put on the garage door on Perran Drive are still there! Summers and holidays were spent at the Kurrle’s cottage in Washago where he enjoyed swimming, fishing, canoeing, and boating. The family moved to Overland Park, Kansas, in 1978 where Doug continued to play hockey. Doug graduated from Shawnee Mission South in 1980.
Doug worked summers at the Overland Park Golf Club doing greens maintenance. After graduation, Doug worked in Lenexa as a printing press operator. In 1984, Doug moved back to the Toronto area, and continued his career as a printing press operator for Avery Label. After 16 years, Doug left the printing business for a new job as a restoration technician in the disaster restoration business, where he worked for the past 15 years.
Doug was married to Jackie (McKie) from March of 1995 to August of 2004. Together they raised her children Greg and Shari in Kitchener, Ontario.
Doug continued to enjoy the outdoors, especially fishing, and liked to go on extended fishing trips to northern Ontario and Quebec with his friends. He was known by everyone to be avid fan of the band, The Who. He loved 60’s music and attending concerts. As a Canadian citizen, he was also able to make two trips to Cuba, where he enjoyed interacting with the locals and experiencing the history and culture. During baseball season, Doug would cheer for the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Toronto Maple Leafs during hockey season. He remained a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs though during football season. Doug, Ken, and Jack could always be counted on to engage in spirited discussions about sports of all kinds.
Doug loved his childhood. He loved his mom’s and Nanny’s cooking and playing with friends in the neighborhood. He led a simple life, never complaining and it didn’t take much to make him happy.
Doug is preceded in death by his mother Helen Garbig. Doug is survived by his father Jack Garbig, older brother Ken (Dacia) Garbig, sister Linda (Brad) Mallory, nephew Sean Mallory, and nieces Catie and Rachel Mallory, stepson Greg Eng, stepdaughter Shari (Lee) McMillan and their son Mitchell. He leaves behind many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends as well.
