A Celebration of Life will be held on December 12, from 1:00 to 3:00 at Deer Creek Golf Club, 7000 W. 133rd Street, Leawood, KS for Douglas Bryan McNary 53, who passed away November 14, 2015.   Doug was born January 17, 1962 to Harry Duane McNary and Carol Wilkins McNary while living in Golden, CO.  The family moved to Overland Park where Doug attended Shawnee Mission Schools, participating in Band, Plays and Baseball while in Junior High, followed by Football, Cross Country, Debate, and Forensics in High School.  He won a National Extemporary Speech competition as a Senior.  Doug attained Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts.  He graduated from the United States Air Force Academy with military honors.  While there he avoided marching in some of the parades by doing the announcing instead and won National Extemp Contest there, also.  He enjoyed the planes, gliders and parachuting, but went on to a career in Intelligence.  His 16 ½ years of active duty included briefings for Generals, multiple AWACS missions in the Middle East, assignments at SHAPE headquarters in Belgium, Targeting officer in Dessert Storm, Social Aide at the White House, Speech Writer for Secretary of Defense Cohen,  and a year at the Council of Foreign Relations in New York. During this time he also received a Master’s Degree from Georgetown University. His post-military career included working for the Department of Defense writing narrative portions of the Air Force Budget, presenting it to Congressional Committees.
Doug was preceded in death by his Father, Duane, and grandparents.  He is survived by his Mother, Carol, and sister Diane McNary, as well as uncles, aunt, and cousins.  He also leaves many good friends, including Amy Edwards and former wife, Ann McNary.  We thank the VA Medical Services in Leavenworth for their help with his PTSD and the irreversible effects.
The Celebration of Life between 1:00 to 3:00 pm on December 12 will be preceeded by a family service at 10:00 am at St Francis of Assisi in the Pines. In lieu of flowers, memorial suggestions are Shawnee Mission Education Foundation (SMEF -  smef.org) to benefit Debate and Forensics programs, Voluntary Services for aid to veterans at Leavenworth VA to DDEVAMC,  or  First Call for scholarships for those supporting patients to First Call (firstcallkc.org)
