DOUGLAS GORDON PETTY Douglas Gordon Petty of Leawood, died September 9, 2017. Doug was born April 12, 1943, in Cambridge, MA, to Dee Ellen (Naylor) and Charles Gordon Petty. Doug was married for 30 years to the love of his life E. Deana Petty. They shared a remarkable love story. He attended Prairie Elementary School, graduate of Shawnee Mission East High School, attended Westminster College and was graduated from the University of Kansas in 1965. Doug was a proud member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and embodied the creed of The True Gentleman. He was awarded The Order of The Lion by the Kansas Alpha Chapter. Doug served as a Captain in the United States Air Force. After his service, Doug began a career in journalism and public relations. Doug retired from American Century Investments in 2016. Doug and his wife Deana have six children and 14 grandchildren who are the center of their lives. Their home is the gathering place for every family function. Christmas Eve Pageants with Grandpa playing guitar, summer barbeques, birthday celebrations and the Petty Olympics at the Double D Ranch. Doug's favorite times were spent traveling with his wife Deana, working together in their yard and relaxing on the patio. Doug was devoted to his family, to his country and God. Doug was preceded in death by his father Charles Gordon Petty. He is survived by his wife E. Deana Petty, his mother Dee Ellen Petty, sisters Cheri (Bob) Evilsizer and Susan (Jerry) Mason, Abilene, KS; children Tiffany Saunders, Vail, CO; Bryce (Marti) Petty, Candace (Patrick) Kelly, Malibu, CA; Chris (Donna) Petty, Frisco, TX; Ashley (Marc) Lyerly, Brooke (Blaine) Degnan and his beloved dog Josie; his grandchildren Lindsay, Andrew and Cooper Saunders; Maryn and Natalie Petty; Casey, Maxine and Quinn Kelly; Charlie and Emma Petty; Mac and Weston Lyerly; Jacob and Cate Degnan. Service at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, at Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Rd, Prairie Village, KS where Doug was a lifetime member.
