Douglas "Doug" Kohlhase

December 27, 1969 — December 22, 2021

Overland Park, Kansas

Douglas “Doug” Wood Kohlhase, age 51, of Overland Park, died peacefully at home on December 22, 2021, after his brave and courageous 2 ½ year battle with rectal cancer. Doug fought relentlessly with his attitude of “smile and grind” and never complained or let others see his challenges. True to his generous and loving nature, Doug would often send gifts to friends, family, and co-workers to make sure they knew he cared for them. Every person has a story about his sense of humor or friendliness. Doug will be forever missed by many.

Doug was born December 27, 1969, in Kansas City, MO. He attended Oak Park Elementary, Shawnee Mission South and then graduated from his beloved Kansas State University, where he was a member of the fraternity Alpha Tau Omega. Doug enjoyed everything about Kansas City and would often give tours of the city to visitors.

One of Doug’s passions in his life was his work, and he took great pride in his work ethic. Doug often spoke of his many jobs growing up: sacking groceries, putting in sprinkler systems, waiting tables where he would make balloon animals for the kids (a round balloon with an animal face drawn on it) and working at the record store, which began his love affair with music. Doug enjoyed getting up at the crack of dawn to get in early to work, and he gave his all at every job he had creating many solid friendships along the way. Doug was ready to get back to work at ExamFx /Ascend Learning as the Director of Operations and Support. Doug’s legacy of a being a great co-worker will live on in stories of his over-the-top Secret Santa’s, the Donut Club and helping others reach their fullest potential.

Doug’s first “real” job out of college was at Ford Motor Credit Company, where he met the love of his life and best friend, Jennifer. Doug’s parents loved to tell the story of how they asked about his first day and Doug said “I met a girl...” A few years later, Doug and Jennifer were married in Dodge City, KS, on September 4, 1999. Doug was a loving husband, full of grand gestures, who made Jennifer laugh often throughout their marriage. They were a team.

Doug’s number one priority was his family. Doug welcomed his sons, Isaac John in 2004, and August “Gus” Luke in 2008. Doug said the best thing about being a parent is you get to play all the time. As the boys were growing up, Doug never left their sides. He aimed to be the best dad ever, even though it came naturally to him.  As a family, much of our time was spent together and there were a lot of sports, biking, swimming, washers, movies, music, and lake time. Doug was at every practice and game, coaching or cheering for the boys. He would put an extra ball, glove, or some sport related item in the car to ensure there was always a ball to kick or throw wherever they went. Doug played catch with Isaac so much he now looks like he hardly tries as an outfielder. Doug painted a basketball free throw lane on the driveway and now Gus can easily sink a 3-pointer. It is easy to see how all the little things Doug did as a father have shaped and prepared his sons well. Doug took great pleasure in being a father and uncle and making the most of any occasion with every kid he met.

Doug’s kind and generous legacy will live on through his family; Jennifer Kohlhase, wife of 22 years, and children Isaac Kohlhase (17) and Gus Kohlhase (13).

Doug is survived by his brother Mark (Becky) Kohlhase and nieces Clair and Jane Kohlhase; aunt Judy Kale; half siblings Kathy (Dennis) Royston and David Kohlhase.

Doug is also survived by his in-laws Tim and Lois Banta; sister in-laws Michaela Banta, Katie (Mike) Laird and nephews Adam and Sam Laird.

Doug’s parents, Bruce and Sally Kohlhase; aunt and uncle Sue and Larry Knobbe; aunt Joanne Alberding; grandmother Tutu; and his grandmother by marriage Kay “Granny” Kribs proceeded him in death.

A special thank you to the countless family, friends, nurses, and healing practioners who showed him love, hope, and most importantly support, in his difficult journey.
