William Frederick Case, M.D., of Overland Park KS, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at the age of 86. Bill was born on August 20, 1936, in St. Louis, Missouri, to William C. Case and Bernice (Rubin) Case. Growing up, Bill enjoyed Boy Scouts, music, and student counsel. He graduated from Southwest High School in 1954. Bill was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at Washington University in St. Louis, where he earned a BA in 1958 and met the love of his life, Amelia “Amy” Jane Felts. He and Amy married June 14, 1958, in Carbondale, Illinois. Bill received a degree in medicine from the University of Missouri - Columbia School of Medicine in 1961, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honorary Society. Following a medical internship at Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa, OK, he entered the United States Air Force, and served as a Flight Surgeon at Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base from 1962-64, and was named Flight Surgeon of the Year Air Defense Command in 1964. He served in the active Air Force Reserves from 1964-1967. Bill completed his medical residency in ophthalmology at the University of Missouri Columbia School of Medicine in 1967, and entered private practice in ophthalmology in Kansas City, MO shortly thereafter. During his career, Bill served as Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at UMKC School of Medicine, Truman Medical Center Department of Ophthalmology from 1972-2000. He served as President of Medical Staff at Baptist Memorial Hospital, President of the Missouri Ophthalmology Society, Inc., and President of the Kansas City Society of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology. Additionally, he served as 3rd Vice President of the Missouri State Medical Association. Bill earned many awards throughout his career, including the Hal Foster Award from the Kansas City Society of Ophthalmology & Otolaryngology, the Golden Medallion Award from the Missouri Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and Physician of the Year award from St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, MO. Bill retired on January 1, 2000. For the past five years, he and Amy have resided at Tallgrass Creek Senior Living Community.
Throughout his life, Bill traveled extensively with Amy and their friends in the United States and overseas. In addition, Bill and Amy found great happiness spending time at their second home in Winter Park, Colorado, where they enjoyed playing golf, hiking, skiing, camping and sharing vacations with their children and grandchildren. Bill also liked to attend the Kansas City Symphony, play tennis, read, and cook.
Surviving are his wife, Amy Case of Overland Park, daughter, Kathryn “Kathy” Case Tahan (Ted) of St. Louis, MO, son William “Bill” Robert Case (Stasha) of Olathe, KS, and daughter Rebecca “Becky” Case Davis (Brad) of Overland Park, KS, and grandchildren, Paul Tahan, Nicholas “Nick” Tahan, Lindsay Davis, and Madison “Maddie” Davis.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2023, at Johnson County Chapel & Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be at 1pm, with services to follow at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired, Kansas City, Missouri (www.ccvi.org) or a charity of your choice.
