Earl W. McCabe, 85, of Overland Park, Kan., passed away December 30, 2008, at home.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 6, 2009, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park. A visitation will be held at the chapel Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. Burial in Johnson County Memorial Gardens.
Earl was born February 13, 1923, in Kansas City, Mo., to A. J. McCabe and Annie Helm McCabe. One brother, Loren, and his parents preceded him in death. He graduated from Westport High '39 and Kansas City Junior College in '41. May of 1942, he joined the U.S. Navy and attended flight school at NPS St. Mary's, California, where he received his wings as a Naval Aviator in the U.S. Marine Corps. He flew the F-4U Corsair with VMF-218 in WW II South Pacific. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and three air medals. He was honorably discharged from the Marines as captain USMC-Reserves in February 1959 at the Olathe, NAS. Earl worked for Swift & Company for 20 years, St. Luke's Hospital in management, and later as an independent factory representative. He was a member of Overland Park Christian Church, serving as deacon, elder and member of the board of directors. He was also active in Boy Scouts at the church and Johnson County 3&2 Baseball. He is a life member of the American Legion-Post #370 and a member of the Commemorative Air Force-Heartland Wing.
His wife, Virginia Ford McCabe, of 63 years, and one son, Ronald L. McCabe and daughter-in-law Nancy McCabe, survive him.
