Ed was born on April 30, 1915 in Washington, D.C. On May 28, 1939, he married "Sally", Sarah Ann Engbrecht. The marriage produced two daughters, Sylvia and Ruth Ann, and one son, Ted Allen. Tragically, Sally passed away in January 1945. A widower with three young children, that same year, while playing piano and organ for a Youth For Christ group in his church, Wallace Memorial in Washington, D.C., he met Evelyn Ellison, who sang in the church choir. They were married on March 1, 1946. The marriage produced one son, Karl. This loving union lasted for 60 years, until Evelyn's death on December 23, 2006. Many people may remember Ed as the friendly, dedicated mailman for the Downtown Overland Park business district, his main route for 21 years, while working for the postal service (1954- 1975). A member of the Shawnee Mission Letter Carriers Union, he served as the union treasurer from 1968 until his retirement. Ed also served as the financial secretary for the National Association of Retired Federal Employees 1162. Even more will remember his music. At a young age, Ed's musical gift was discovered and lessons began on piano at the age of 7 and organ at 14. Early in life he dedicated his musical abilities to the Lord. He graduated from Wheaton College with a Bachelors in Music in 1937 and received his Master's at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. His musical career included teaching at six schools/colleges: Sunnyside Bible School, Wessington Springs Jr. College, Omaha Baptist Institute, Bacone College, Greenville College, and K.C. Bible College (now Calvary Bible College). He always found a church needing his skills everywhere he lived and served in various capacities as pianist/organist/ choir director. From 1951 to 1960, Ed served as the organist and choir director at the First Covenant Church in Kansas City. From 1961-65, he served as church organist for the Countryside Christian Church. Then in 1965, he was called back to the Hillcrest Covenant Church (where Ed was a charter member when the church was born in 1961) by Pastor Glen Lindell. He continued as their church organist for 15 years until his final concert at the church on April 17, 1980. He wrote several music compositions and arranged many others. Still others may remember Ed when he would tune their piano. True to his passion for the organ, Ed had been a member of the American Guild of Organists since 1938, and became Dean of the Kansas City Chapter in 1964/65. He also served on the Examination Committee for several years. Many may remember his faithful attendance for recitals and concerts. But most of all we will remember Ed as a man indeed of few words, yet so much music!
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, sister Dorothy, brother Terrelle, first wife Sarah, and second wife of 60 years, Evelyn. Survivors include daughter, Sylvia Anderson, of Anderson, MO; son, Ted Allen Crum, of Oak Park, Illinois; daughter, Ruth Ann Ritter, of Moberly, MO; and son, Karl Crum, of Overland Park, KS. He took great pride in his 12 grandchildren: Sonya (Anderson) Hancock, Dawn (Anderson) Morley, Douglas Anderson, Terrelle Anderson, Timothy Anderson, Sarah (Anderson) Smith, Jeremy Anderson, Jeffrey Bilyeu, Joe Paul Ritter, Mary Beth (Ritter) Jaderborg, Kristine (Crum) Taylor, and Kyle Ellison Crum; and rejoiced in the lives of his 23 great- grandchildren.
