Edwin D. Ammon, age 81, of Leawood, KS, passed away on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at his home. He was born on February 28, 1931 in Topeka, KS, the son of Miriam E. (Watkins) and Edwin Merle Ammon. His family moved to Kansas City where he attended South East High School and was the captain of the basketball team, which led them to the first city championship. It was also at South East High School where he met the love of his life, Carolyn JoAnn Griffith. Ed went on to continue his education at Washburn University in Topeka, KS, where he belonged to the Kappa Sig Fraternity. In 1957, Ed and Carolyn were married; in 1952 he joined the United States Air Force. While service in the Air Force for 4 years, 2 were spent in Japan. When returning from the Air Force, he continued his education at UMKC and finished at Rockhurst University. When Ed's father died in 1955, he took over the Ammon Painting Company where he was the President for 56 years. Through Ed's career he was also the President of Painters and Decorators Association from 1964-1966, Board Member of Red Bridge Mercantile Bank, Chairman of BASIF, Builders Association Insurance Program, member of the Ariat Shrine and Patrol Unit, Mason at the Masonic Lodge of Kansas City, Kansas City Missouri Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Bureau and Who's Who of Missouri in 1974. Ed was also a member of the Finishing Contractors Association, Business Advisory Council and Milburn Country Club.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Carolyn, of the home; daughters, Terri (Darrell) Fenton of Red Oaks, IA and Diane (Robert) Boyd of Overland Park, KS; son, David Ammon of Leawood, KS; 10 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Doug (Linda) Ammon of KC, MO and 1 sister in law, Judith (Jem) Duffin of West Plains, MO. Ed was preceded in death by one son, Jeffery H. Ammon; 1 brother, Dennis Ammon and both of his parents, Edwin Earl Ammon and Miriam Erma Ammon.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS 66210. Visitation will be held one hour prior, from 10:00-11:00, at the funeral home. Burial will be held in Johnson County Memorial Gardens.
