Norris E. Holstrom, Richardson, TX passed away peacefully on May 25, 2010 at his home. He was born October 2, 1919 in Topeka, KS to Arthur H. and Emma Larsen Holstrom, he was preceded in death by his parents; his former wife of 56 years, Ellamae, eldest son, John; and three brothers. Norris is survived by his current wife, Parthene Duvall Sheetz; daughter Cheryl Bennett and her husband, Bob (Buena Vista, CO); son Thomas and his wife, Vicki (Draper, UT); seven grandsons, Robert, William, and James Sangster; Brian and David Holstrom; and Brandon and Brett Vig; stepdaughter Jackie Metcalf (Albuquerque, NM); and stepsons, Bill Sheetz and his wife Susan (Arlington, TX) and Jim Sheetz and his wife Linda (Bartlesville, OK); nine step-grandchildren; 16 step-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Norris graduated from Topeka High School in 1937. Extremely talented, yet unassuming, Norris was a gifted athlete, having captained Kansas State University’s 1940-41 basketball team. He was a Charter Member of the “Wildcat Legends”. He was a loyal member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. His subsequent Business Degree led to a honorable 40-year career in business administration and personnel management. He served his country proudly (1941-1946), ascending to the rank of Major in the Army Air Corps.
He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved his family and treasured time spent fishing with his grandsons, gardening, and playing golf. He was an adept carpenter, home “handyman”, and artist. His volunteer activities included coaching youth basketball throughout his life, teaching Dale Carnegie courses at Leavenworth Federal Prison, serving as a Stephens Minister at Bates Medical Center in Bentonville, AR and working through his various church organizations. Norris will be missed by all who knew him.
The family will receive visitors at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, June 12, 2010 at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas 66210. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 A.M. and interment immediately after. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the John E. Holstrom/Kansas State ATO Endowment Fund, c/o Bill Muir, President, 2040 Shirley Lane, Manhatten, KS 66502/
