Elaine Steinke

Elaine Dowse Steinke, 81, of Leawood, Kansas, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of Monday, February 18, 2008 at the Kansas City Hospice House.

Memorial services will be held at Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church, 9300 Nall Avenue, Overland Park, Kansas, on Friday, February 22, 2008 at 1 p.m. Elaine was born September 27, 1926 in Kempton, Illinois, to Clarence L. and Ida Kerr Dowse. She graduated from Kempton High School and taught in a one room school house prior to attending college. As did her mother, older brother and other members of the family, Elaine attended Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in 1949. At Illinois Wesleyan she joined Kappa Delta Sorority where she served as chapter president and remained an active alumni member for the rest of her life. She later returned to college and earned a Master of Education degree from the University of Missouri Kansas City. For 23 years she served as a teacher and later as counselor at Broadmoor Junior High School and Shawnee Mission West High School in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. Elaine especially enjoyed her membership and friendships in Chapter FV P.E.O. and Tomahawk Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her enjoyments and hobbies included traveling throughout the United States and Elaine visited and toured over thirty foreign countries. She enjoyed her crossword puzzles, bridge clubs, needlepoint, reading, her book club and following the Kansas City Royals. She was a lifelong and active member of the Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church. Earlier in her life Elaine enjoyed playing golf and bowling as well as being active in her church choir, teaching Sunday school and taking great interest in her two sons activities. While at Illinois Wesleyan, Elaine met and married the love of her life, Carl, who died in 1987.

She is survived by her son Jeffrey of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and son Kenneth and his wife Kristina of Bakersfield, California. Also surviving is her sister, Carolyn Scott of Bettendorf, Iowa and her older brother, Richard K. Dowse, Cody, Wyoming.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care, 10100 W. 87th St., Suite 100, Overland Park, KS 66212, or the charity of your choice. Interment will be at Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, Overland Park, Kansas.
