ELBERT JACKSON SIMS, JR.
ELBERT JACKSON SIMS, JR. (also known as “E. J.” or “Charlie”) passed away at his home at The Rose Estates in Overland Park, Kansas on January 22, 2011. He was born on September 15, 1918 to Jack and Carrie Voorheis Sims in Sturgeon, Missouri where he grew up and graduated from high school. Upon graduation from Technical School in St. Louis, Missouri in August of 1941, E.J. began working for Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Co. E.J. married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Spelman, on September 20, 1941 in Columbia, Missouri.
In October 1942 E.J. enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged in January 1946 from the Pacific Theater. Thereafter he resumed working for Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Company and worked for same company for 41 years until retirement in September 1982. During his long service with Panhandle Eastern, he and his wife, Margaret, lived in numerous towns along the pipeline, including Mexico, MO, Guymon, OK, Liberal, KS, Hugoton, KS, Paola, KS, Emporia, KS, Newton, KS, and Overland Park, KS. E.J. thoroughly enjoyed the natural gas pipeline business and he really loved Panhandle Eastern. During his excellent career with Panhandle, E.J. served primarily as a Natural Gas Measurement Engineer.
Mr. Sims was preceded in death by Margaret, his wife of 69 years, who died on September 27, 2010, his parents, a sister, Wilma Lawrence of Sturgeon, MO, a sister, Thelma Reams of Centralia, MO and a brother, Howard R. Sims of Satellite, FL. E.J. is survived by his brother, John P. Sims and wife, Alice, of Independence, MO. and his sister-in-law Ginnie Sims of Satellite, FL.
E.J. is also survived by three sons, Thad Sims and wife Elnora of Dallas, Texas, Bruce Sims and wife Vicki of Leawood, Kansas and Phil Sims of Overland Park, Kansas. Also surviving are four granddaughters, Amy Sims Jones and husband Randall, Ashley Sims Coleman and husband Clinton, Neely Nicole Sims, and Lacey Sims Gruenebaum and husband Andy. E.J. is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Nathan, Nora, Noble and Naomi Jones and Emily and Sarah Coleman, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. E.J. lived his life with love, joy and generosity, and he instilled those qualities in the lives of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family gratefully acknowledges the devoted care he received from the staff at The Rose Estates and Heartland Hospice. A visitation with the family will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 29, 2011 with a memorial service immediately thereafter, both at the Valley View United Methodist Church, 8412 W. 95th Street; Overland Park, Kansas 66212. Honorary Pallbearers are Randall Jones, Clinton Coleman, Andy Gruenebaum, and Scot Schiefelbein.
