Ellen Elizabeth (Buhite) Gallagher, age fifty of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on May 23, 2016 from complications due to multiple sclerosis.
Ellen was born November 7, 1965 in Norman, OK , to Mary & Russ Buhite. She grew up in Norman enjoying all sports; soccer, softball, basketball, and was the captain of a state champion soccer team. She graduated from Norman High School in 1984 and attended the University of Kansas for two years, transferring back to her beloved Oklahoma Sooners two years later where she graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in History in 1988. During her undergraduate years, Ellen was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta at both KU and OU. It was during this time that she met her future husband to be, Jeff Gallagher. Ellen went back to the Kansas Jayhawks to attend law school, where she met some of her dearest lifelong friends.
In quick secession, Jeff and Ellen married in 1990, she graduated with her Juris Doctorate in 1991, and she became a mother to the light of her life, Gracie, in 1994. After practicing law for nine years, Ellen and her family moved to Overland Park, KS.
Ellen volunteered in her community at Stanley Elementary and the Johnson County Library. She was an avid Sooner fan, book lover, enjoyed being outdoors, dogs, butterscotch candies, and her daily Ellen DeGeneres show. She had strong opinions, and was more than happy to share them, especially if she was talking politics.
Most of all, Ellen was a kind and gentle soul who lived life with gusto, had an enormous capacity for love, and an engaging, goofy sense of humor. She was an inspiration to all those who met her. Our blessed Ellen, daughter, sister, mother, wife and friend, will be missed dearly, but she will live on in the memories she helped create. Her warm smile will shine down on us forever.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to ask for memorial donations in Ellen’s name to be made
to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society – Mid-America Chapter – 7611 State Line Road #100, Kansas City, Missouri 64114.
