Ellen W. Selk, Overland Park, Kan., passed away Monday, July 6, 2009, at Villa Saint Francis in Olathe, Kan. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 10, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 8315 W. 93rd, Overland Park, followed by entombment at Johnson County Memorial Gardens, Indoor Courtyard of Memories. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 9, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park.
Ellen was born May 27, 1921, to James Joseph and Bertha Anna (Nilles) Greene of Keswick, Iowa, she was the seventh of 12 children. She was a graduate of Gibson High School and Ottumwa Heights College. She wed C. Howard Selk on April 14, 1951, and was married for 30 years until his passing. As a young woman, Ellen excelled in declamatory speech and was the lead role in several musicals. In her adult life, she worked as a secretary and spent many years working as a real estate agent for Bob Owen Realtors. Before she retired, she worked at Rainbow Mental Health where she made many lifelong friends. Ellen was an avid reader, bridge player, and democrat. Her love of the "letters to the editor" section of the newspaper was a testament to her commitment to hearing both sides of every issue. Ellen was a kind-hearted woman with a sense of humor that will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is preceded in death by her sisters, Anna Stites and Jessie McCurdy; brothers, James N. Greene and Roy L. Greene; brothers-in-law, Carl Stites, Carroll McCurdy, and Joseph Strohman; and infant siblings, Bertha Catherine and Vincent. Survivors include her sisters, Margaret Greene and Kathleen Strohman, both of West Des Moines, Iowa; brothers, John Greene (Vera), Frank Greene (Theresa) both of Keswick, Iowa, and Richard Greene (Carol) of Williamsport, Pa.; sister-in-law, Marilyn Greene of St. Petersburg, Fla.; children, Jerry Selk (Beth) of Warrenton, Mo., Jan Selk of Overland Park, Greg Selk (Tamara) of DeSoto, Kan., and Lisa Deeds (Steve) of Sedalia, Colo.; daughter-in-law, Joyce Selk of O'Fallon, Mo.; grandchildren, Jennifer, Justin, Ashley, Christian, and Sydney; and great grandchild, Brianna.
