Elmer L. Hellweg
1918 - 2018
Elmer L. Hellweg, 98, died on Sunday, May 22, 2016, at Windsor House in Champion, Ohio. Prior to moving to Windsor House four years ago, he made his home in Overland Park, Kansas. Elmer was born on May 12, 1918 to Mr. and Mrs. Daniel (Susanna Limbeck) Hellweg in Lincoln, Nebraska. He attended Trinity Lutheran School and graduated from Lincoln High School in January 1937. In addition, he completed numerous post-secondary business and military courses.
On October 19, 1941, Elmer married Juanita Wolf of Columbus, Nebraska. They celebrated 65 years of marriage prior to her death on December 18, 2006. They raised three children: Dr. Kathryn Hellweg-Devadan of Warren, OH, Robert Hellweg of Kansas City, MO, and Christie Holle of Parker, CO. And, they have four grandchildren: Shannon Raymer-Kuhel, Daniel, Anne and Grace Hellweg.
Elmer grew up working in his father’s cigar manufacturing business and briefly worked in the advertising/display business before joining Continental Oil Company (Conoco) as a mailroom clerk in 1938. He retired from Conoco after 40 years of service and worked his way up to management positions in various district and regional offices in Lincoln, NE, Cedar Rapids, IA and the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. He was an active member of the Conoco Credit Union beginning in 1938, including serving five terms as president. He was also active in the Nebraska and Kansas State Credit Unions.
Major Hellweg, Retired USAR, was a proud WWII Veteran. He joined the Army Air Corps on November 4, 1942 at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. He was assigned to the 489th Service Squadron 13th Service Group in San Bernardino, CA. In May 1944, he was deployed to the Asiatic Pacific Theater, participating in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign and the American Campaign, and serving in such places as Oahu, Hawaii; Anguar, Palau Islands; and Okinawa, Japan, prior to his return to the United States in January 1946 as part of the 58th Air Service Group. Six months later, he joined the Nebraska National Guard, 34th QM Company of the newly formed 34th Infantry Division. In 1959, he transferred to the USAR, serving as Commanding Officer of the 704th Chemical Co, Kansas City, KS; and Commanding Officer of the 152nd Signal Co L/L, Kansas City, KS. In 1962, he transferred to the 35th Reg. 89th Division, Lincoln, NE, and retired on July 31, 1968.
Major Hellweg received the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Joint Services Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War Two Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal WWII (Japan) and sharpshooter and marksmanship awards for his service during WWII, along with other USAR and National Guard honors during his military career.
Mr. Hellweg was active in Bethany Lutheran Church, Overland Park, Kansas, for over forty years. He served as Comptroller, as a member of the Board of Trustees, sang in the choir, served on building and stewardship committees, helped with funerals, participated in the men’s Bible Study and S.W.A.N.S. and served on numerous other committees at the local and district levels. Previously, he had been an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Lincoln, NE, Zion Lutheran Church, Prairie Village, KS, Concordia Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, IA, and Faith Lutheran Church, Lincoln, NE.
Elmer was a master woodcrafter and also enjoyed golf, bowling, outdoor barbequing, landscaping and bird watching. He had been active in the American Legion, retired military officers associations, the Retired Conoco Employees Group and the Optimist International.
Survivors include: three children, Dr. Kathryn Hellweg-Devadan (Dan) of Warren, OH, Robert Hellweg (Gale Tallis) of Kansas City, MO, and Christie Holle (Kevin) of Parker, CO; four grandchildren, Shannon Raymer-Kuhel (Steve) of Warren, OH, Daniel Hellweg of Baton Rouge, LA, Anne Hellweg of Kansas City, MO, and Grace Hellweg of Carlisle, PA; a sister-in-law, Lucille Wolf of Medford, OR; and fifteen nieces and nephews. In addition to Elmer’s parents and wife, his three brothers, Dietrich “Dick” Hellweg, Arthur Hellweg, and Dr. Harold Hellweg, preceded him in death.
