Eugene "Gene" Tinberg

Eugene (Gene) Edward Tinberg, 88 of Overland Park, KS passed away on 5/5/17.

Gene was born on September 26, 1928 to Roy and Selma Tinberg in Bonner Springs, KS where he grew up on the family farm as the 5th of six children. He is a graduate of Bonner Springs High School and The University of Kansas earning a bachelor’s degree in business. After college, he attended Army Officers Training in Ft. Belvoir, Virginia and then went on to serve our country as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Korean War from 1951 through 1953 in the Corps of Engineers. After the service, while working in Emporia, KS he met his future wife, Darlene Schwendiman. The couple settled in Bakersfield, CA and relocated to Overland Park in 1965 where Gene has been a resident of the community since. He worked for many years in real estate and sales and part-time farming until retirement.   Gene enjoyed many cruises and travels with his wife and he also enjoyed hunting in western Kansas with his son.  He was a long time member of Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church   Besides years of attending many Jayhawk football and basketball games, he was actively involved in the community serving as past President of the Leawood Lions, where he was a champion bell ringer for the Salvation Army and Pancake Breakfast ticket seller, past President of the Kansas Korean War Veterans and a member of the Masons.  He was able to partake in the Honor Flight Program for retired war veterans where he toured Washington, DC. An avid bridge player, Gene loved his weekly games and the fellowship with his bridge buddies.

Gene was preceded in death by his son, Dale, his parents, Roy and Selma Tinberg, brothers; Dick, Bob and Don and his sister, Shirley Houghton.

He is survived by his loving wife Darlene, daughter Lori and her husband Charlie Roberts, his brother Kenneth and his wife, Pat and his sister-in-law Mary Jeanne Tinberg.  He also is survived by his grandchildren Sarah Tinberg, Mitchell and Megan Roberts and step grandchildren Jamie and Mike Tinberg and step great granddaughter Alice Tinberg and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

A memorial will be held on Friday, May 12th at the Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, KS 66210 at 2 pm with interment to follow.  The family will greet visitors prior to the service at 1 pm.
