Evelyn "Maxine" Cochran, 90, of Overland Park, KS, passed away Saturday, April 12,2014, at Delmar Gardens of Lenexa. After a long and wonderful life, filled with devotion and service to her husband, children, profession, community.
Maxine was born December 19, 1923, to Frederick and Florence (Vinzant) Jones, in Fairmont, MO. She spent the early years of her life in Topeka, KS. She graduated from the University of Kansas in 1945 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. She later received her Masters of Science Degree in Special Education in 1970, after several years of attending graduate school in the evenings, while she continued to teach school during the day, care for her family, attend her children's many activities and sporting events, and maintain a household.
While attending KU, she was an active student, serving as treasurer of her junior class and president of Kappa Phi (a national Methodist women's sorority. She was elected to the Kansas Academy of Science, Phi Sigma Chi, and the Dean's List.
Maxine was an educator and curriculum specialist in Johnson County for thirty years, teaching in the Olathe Public School District and the Shawnee Mission School District until her retirement in 1986. She was an active member of GI Chapter, PEO, the American Association of Retired School Personnel, the KU Alumni Association, and the Valley View United Methodist Church.
Maxine and her husband, Leland, were married on April 7, 1946. They traveled extensively throughout their marriage, visiting all of the continents, and sharing many cruises together.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Leland Cochran, her brother, Thomas Oran Jones, and her parents, Fred and Florence Jones.
Maxine is survived by her three sons, Steve Cochran, 65, who lives in Lawrence, KS, Keith Cochran, 62, and his wife, Kathy, who live in Statesville, NC, and Dr. Kevin Cochran, 56, who lives in Augusta, GA. Also surviving are three grandsons; Michael Cochran, and his wife Laura, who live in Charlotte, NC, David Cochran, and his wife, Amber, who live in Huntersville, NC, and Jeffrey Cochran, who lives in Bisco, NC. Also surviving are three granddaughters; Heather Cheevers, and her husband, Craig, who live in Greenland, AK, and Madison and Brianna Cochran, who both live in Augusta, GA. Maxine has four grandchildren; Walker, Kate, and Calvin Cheevers, who live in Greenland, AR, and Fox Marcus Cochran, who lives in Charlotte, NC. David and Amber are expecting Maxine's second great-granddaughter in May. One nephew, Thomas Jones and one niece, Marketta Bratton.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 18, 2014 at Valley View United Methodist Church, 8412 W. 95th Street, Overland park, KS 66212. The family will receive friends at 10:00 AM on Friday, April 18, 2014 at the church. A private family entombment will take place at the Johnson County Memorial Gardens---Indoor Garden of Memories, Overland Park, KS.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Valley View United Methodist Church.
