Evelyn Kessler

May 5, 1922 — October 7, 2017

Evelyn Kessler passed away on October 7, 2017 at the age of 95.  She was born May 5, 1922 in Concordia, MO to Herman Steffens and Caroline (Nienhueser) Steffens.  She married Allen Kessler on July 9, 1944.  It was a wartime marriage, as they joined in matrimony just four months prior to Allen’s service in the battlefields of Europe.  The marriage endured for 71 years.  Evelyn was employed as a secretary for Commonwealth Theaters in Kansas City, MO.  She was a lifelong Lutheran and member of Bethany Lutheran.  Her faith was of utmost importance to her.  Her unselfish and humble spirit showed this.  She was blessed with a joy of living and is now at peace in God’s loving arms.  She had an unwavering Christian walk with her Lord and developed a deep faith that was the foundation for her life.  Evelyn’s involvement with Village Gardens, Zion Braille group (making braille Bibles for the blind) and her gourmet club gave her much joy.
Most precious to her was the time spent at home either cooking a favorite meal, trying new recipes, entering cooking contests or sharing food with others.  She will be remembered for all of her numerous cards and letters sent to family and friends.
Preceding her in death were her beloved husband, Allen Kessler, parents, a brother, Melvin Steffens, a sister, Ruth Pitts and infant son, James Douglas.  Those who remain to remember her love are son, Bruce Kessler of Overland Park, daughter, Barbara Toman and son-in-law, Frank Toman of Houston, TX, 2 grandchildren, Matthew of Austin, Texas and Ashley, of Houston, TX.
Memorial Service will be Monday, October 16, 2017 at 2:00 pm, with Visitation from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at Bethany Lutheran Church, 9101 Lamar Ave., Overland Park, KS.  Interment will be at Veteran’s Cemetery, Higginsville, MO - 11:00 am  Tuesday October 17th with a luncheon to follow.
A heartfelt thank you to Ruby Aikens and Patricia Morales for their loving care.  The family thanks everyone for being with them today, for their prayers, and expressions of comfort.  Memorial contributions in memory of Evelyn may be given to Stephen Ministry's at Bethany Lutheran Church, 9101 Lamar Ave. Overland Park, KS 66207
