Evelyn Olga (Erickson) Peterson
Evelyn celebrated her 90th birthday on Valentines this year. She was born during a snowstorm on a farm in beautiful northeastern Iowa – near Postville. Her parents, Ben and Amanda; and siblings, Louie, Irene, Alvin, and Lynn have heralded her entry into the Kingdom of Heaven. She loved her family and was very proud having grown up on a family farm.
Evelyn is also preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Bill Peterson. She leaves behind her sister Dolores Koser; children Rick (JoAnnette), Cristy (Charlie) Roberts, Ron (Karin), and Randy (Laura). Her heart was filled with love and she prayed daily for her grandchildren; Julie, Ricky, Leslie, Whitney, Bailey, Eric, David, Caroline, Meg, Ben, Mark, Annie, and Jerod; and great-grandchildren; Anthony, Andrew, Lucas, and Evelyn. She also has many nieces and nephews who describe her as a beautiful soul.
Evelyn was able to stay in her own home until the end of her life. She had many guardian angels who accompanied her to church and took her swimming 3 days/week.
During WWII, Evelyn was a teacher in a one-room Iowa schoolhouse, an opportunity she absolutely loved. She later attended the University of Iowa where she met Bill Peterson. They made church and family their priorities. They moved to many states, landing in Overland Park in 1960 where they spent the rest of their lives except for a few years on Long Island.
Anyone who knew Evelyn as a receptionist, church member, Sunday school teacher, cub scout leader, and neighbor would call her incredibly friendly. She just loved people and knew no strangers. Her hospitality extended to new people in the community who were often served a great meal or neighborhood children who came over for homemade cookies.
Donations can be made to her church, Atonement Lutheran (9948 Metcalf, Overland Park 66212), where Evelyn was a proud charter member. Her final services will be with visitation from 5-7:00pm Friday at Atonement Lutheran Church and the funeral service at 11:00am Saturday at the church.
