Evelyne McHenry

Evelyne McHenry, 87, of Overland Park, Kansas, died September 1, 2023, at Tallgrass Creek in Overland Park. A visitation will be held from 5-7PM on Thursday September 7, 2023, at Johnson County Funeral Chapel and Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, KS 66210. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association https://www.alz.org/kansascity?form=alz_donate in memory of Evelyne.

Evelyne Hannabach was born in Killaly, Saskatchewan on December 2, 1935, as the 12^th of fifteen children to Joseph and Caroline Hannabach, emigrees from Germany. Upon the death of her parents at age 13 Evelyne moved to the United States and lived with her aunt and uncle in Culver, Indiana. Evelyne met Wilbur McHenry while working at US Steel in Gary Indiana and they were married in 1962. Evelyne had her son John in 1964 and the family lived in Indiana, Ohio, and Virginia before finally moving to Kansas in 2007 to be close to her beloved grandson Jonathan.

Evelyne lived a highly active life and participated in social organizations including Tri-Kappa and PEO. In her younger years Evelyne could be found bowling and golfing, both of which she did quite well despite her small stature. In later years Evelyne loved to garden and was fond of hummingbirds and cardinals, planting flowers to attract the hummingbirds and filling bird feeders for cardinals. Evelyne’s greatest joy, however, came from her devotion to her family. She was a great mother to her son John and took devoted care of her husband Wilbur until his passing in 2018.

Evelyne is survived and will be dearly missed by her son, John D. McHenry, Sisters Joan Barth and Lorraine Buvinger, Daughter-in-law Pam McHenry, and grandson Jonathan McHenry.
