George passed away peacefully on Friday, January 15, in his home surrounded by his loving family. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, January 19, at 2 p.m. at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kan. Born in Kansas City, Kan., he was the only child of Fred and Frieda Zahn. George graduated from Wyandotte High School and was an Eagle Scout. He attended the University of Kansas and was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. George was a veteran of the United States Army and served our country in Germany. He married Nancy Sue Scott on January 30, 1954. Sue's note to him on the back of their wedding photo was inscribed "I love you more than yesterday and less than tomorrow." He was a part owner of National Checking Company in St. Paul, Minn. George founded the American Royal BBQ Contest in 1980 and has been a loyal supporter and a Governor for numerous years. George was proceeded in death by his parents, Fred and Frieda Zahn, and his wife of 49 years, Sue Scott Zahn. He is survived by his children Thomas Zahn of Prairie Village and Lisa Zahn Black and husband Reed Black of Prairie Village; granddaughters Whitney Joy Crooks and Rebecca Crooks; his brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Betty Scott of Mission Hills, Kan., and his faithful dog, Merry. George divided his time between his home in Prairie Village, Kan., and Estes Park, Colo. This family would like to thank Dr. Deborah Manning and Sunflower Hospice for assisting with his peaceful transition.
