Fleta Margaret Wilson Dukes, 95, passed away peacefully and joined her loving husband of 57 years on Monday, June 9, 2008.
Fleta was born April 25, 1913 in Hoisington, Kansas to George G. Margaret L. Wilson. Her mother died when she was 16, the year she graduated from high school. She headed to Kansas City, Kansas to attend nursing school at the Bethany Hospital School of Nursing. She became a public health nurse assisting families through the Depression and helping them to live better lives. She met her future husband, Dr. Howard H. Dukes, Sr., who worked as a soda jerk, at Penninger?s Pharmacy, while attending dental school. They dated for several years and were married July 18, 1938. While Howard was away during WWII, Fleta attended Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee and graduated with a Masters in Public Health Nursing.
She was a long time member of Old Mission Methodist Church. She taught water aerobics, played bridge, loved to read and most important to her was her family.
She is survived by her son, Howard, Jr. and wife Rebecca, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, son Dave and wife, Barb, of Overland Park; grandson, Chris and wife, Jackie and great grandsons, Ben, Hunter and Jacob, of Jacksonville, Florida and grandson Brian and wife, Nikki, of St. Louis. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and faithful caregivers at Aberdeen Village.
According to her wishes, Fleta will be cremated, her ashes combined with those of her beloved Howard, and scattered. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Aberdeen Village, 17500 @. 119th , Olathe, KS 66061, who so lovingly cared for Fleta the last five years of her life.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 28 at Vineyard Christian Fellowship, 9777 Antioch, Overland Park, KS, 66212.
