Frances Rice Davis, 89, Overland Park, KS, died peacefully surrounded by fam-ily December 1, 2009, at the KC Hospice House. Funeral services will held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 4, at D.W. New-comer's & Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS. Mrs. Davis was born November 12, 1920, in Tamaroa, IL, to Minnie Guy & Edward Eillis Rice. Later in life, she met Darvin Davis while attending the Uni-versity of Illinois and they were united in marriage on December 27, 1941. As the wife of an Army Lieutenant, she lived in ten different states making al-most 30 moves with her husband and three sons. She worked as a substitute teacher in the Raytown School District during the 1960-1970s. In 1967-68 Fran-ces & Dave hosted an AFS student from Japan, giving them a fourth son - who visited her as recently as two months ago. An avid sports fan, Frances loved her fighting Illini, the KC Chiefs, and es-pecially the Phil Jackson - led Chicago Bulls & LA Lakers. She was an accom-plished golfer playing well beyond her 80th birthday. Christmas was Frances' favorite time of year. She would shine preparing perfect red bows on pack-ages, displaying her extensive Santa collection, and making her famous cookies & peanut butter balls. She was known for her array of beautiful red sweaters, perfect penmanship and in-comparable cooking, but above all, Frances loved her large family and fun times.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Darvin D. Davis, eldest son, Gerald E. Davis and sister Miriam Lemons. Mrs. Davis is sur-vived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Winnie Davis, KC MO, Jack and Bernice Davis, Pearisburg, VA, Dr. Masashi and Chieko Takada, Fukaya, Ja-pan; six grandchildren, Michael Davis, Matthew Davis, Jennifer and husband Joel Gray, Shannan and husband Jimmy Mulcahey, Clayton and wife Angie Davis and Robert Davis; and six great-grandchildren, Tom, Mason, Finn, Macy, Joe and Beckley. Other survivors in-clude siblings, Ernestine Lammle, Harold Rice, Ola Mae VanHoorbeke and many nieces & nephews.
