Frances Dale Mullins passed away Tuesday, October 19th, 2010 at Sunrise of Lenexa, Lenexa, Kansas. She was born on June 5th, 1919 in Tulsa, Oklahoma where she attended grade school and moved to Parsons, Kansas where she graduated from Parsons High School and Parsons Junior College.
Dale received her degree in piano from the College of Emporia where she was secretary to the dean of men. She played cello in the symphony and was accompanist for many musical groups and soloists. She was elected to Mu Phi Epsilon honorary music society.
After graduation Dale taught high school music in the small mining city of Trese, Kansas where she infused a moribund music program with intensive teaching and within a year created a marching band that participated in the Kansas Day parade at the American Royal. She later also taught at Chetopa, Kansas. But in December 1943 after spending a weekend in Parsons she met an old school friend Reverdy "Rev" Mullins, who was just returning from combat as afighter pilot. They were married two weeks later, a marriage that lasted 63 years until Rev's passing in July of 2007.
Dale was a substitute teacher in the Johnson County high schools for a number of years but spent most of her time raising their three children and performing charitable work. She served as a Red Cross volunteer at the University of Kansas Medical Center for 27 years and was on the Board of Directors of the Johnson County Red Cross and the Greater Kansas City Red Cross.
Her love of music never waned but her cello playing days ended after a broken wrist failed to mend properly. In 1975 she learned to fly at the Johnson County Executive Airport and joined Rev in sharing pilot duties on many flying
trips and vacations. She was an ardent jazz fan and seldom missed a week listening to the best jazz musicians in the area. She and Rev moved to Leawood in 1960 and spent 43 happy years there before moving to Garden Villas retirement community in 2003.
Dale is survived by her three children, R.L. and his wife Mary Lynne of Tucson, Arizona and granddaughter Erin Atherton of Scottsdale, Arizona, daughter Jan Bowman and her husband Steve of Vista, California, and grand daughter Summer Frase of Austin, Texas, and son Robert and his wife Elaine and grandson Austin and granddaughter Katie of Lenexa, Kansas. She is also survived by two great granddaughters.
Visitation will be from 2-4PM on Saturday, October 23rd at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Kansas 66210. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to The Humane Society, Dept MEMIT9, 2100 L. St. NW, Washington, DC 20037.
