Frances Sharpe

August 2, 1930 — April 4, 2016

Frances Marilyn McKie "Mickey" Sharpe

Our dear mother, mother-in-law and grandma Frances Marilyn McKie "Mickey" Sharpe chose to leave her family and join her two favorite men--Jesus Christ and her beloved Bill--on the most beautiful of spring days, April 4, 2016.

More questions than answers remain about the incident that brought her to the ER, where she remained unresponsive until passing peacefully a week later surrounded by her family and caregivers at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Her family is grateful she was able to attend church on Easter Sunday and be with her for dinner later that day, where she was fully engaged.

Born August 2, 1930 to Clark and Lorena McKie in Shenandoah, Iowa, Mickey joins them, her stepmother Margaret, and her late husband William E. Sharpe, who preceded her in death in 1990.  She and Bill were married on June 6, 1959 and had three children, Douglas, Gregory and Michael.  Prior to her marriage and decision to stay at home to raise their boys while supporting Bill's career at Bendix Corporation, later Allied Signal,  Mickey attended Colorado Women's College in Denver from 1948-50.  A member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, she graduated in 1952 from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, with a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education and a Minor in English and Zoology.  She taught briefly in Sydney, NE.

Mickey, like many young and independent women of her day, decided to forego teaching and instead became a flight attendant for TWA based in Kansas City.  She travelled the world and met many interesting people, including President Richard Nixon, upon whom she accidentally spilled coffee cream. To see the pictures of her in the strictly regulated TWA uniform is to behold a bygone era.  After raising her children and following Bill's passing, Mickey lived independently until her death, most recently in her apartment at Lakeview Village in Lenexa, KS.  Her exquisite taste and formal decor resulted in her apartment often being showcased to those considering moving to Lakeview.

Mickey loved and was loved by so many: her Lakeview community, her PEO sisters, her Casa Loma lifetimers, Birthday Month Lunch Bunch, and most especially her church family at Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church and later the Presbyterian Church of Stanley of which she and Bill were founding members.  The epitome of graciousness, Mickey literally shepherded thousands of visitors and new members over the years through the doors and into church life at PCOS.

Mickey's greatest sources of joy were her children and grandchildren, all of whom survive her: Doug and Mary Sharpe and children Hannah and Kelly of Lenexa, KS; Greg and Amy Sharpe and children Emily, Campbell and Taylor of Lincoln, NE; and Mike and Brenda Sharpe and children William and Theresia of Overland Park, KS.  Mickey tracked all their travels, events, games, plays, concerts, activities, honors, and they were all made to feel special and closer to her as a result.

Mickey is also survived by her brother Paul McKie and wife Liz of Prairie Village, KS, and their three children and families; and Bill's sister Harriet Williams and husband Clarence of Bella Vista, AR, and their three children and families.

Visitation at Presbyterian Church of Stanley, 14895 Antioch on Sunday, April 10 from 1-4 p.m.  Funeral service at PCOS on Monday, April 11 at 10 a.m., graveside services immediately following at Johnson County Memorial Gardens.  Services are open to all who knew and loved Mickey.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial to your charity of choice, PCOS , PEO, or Lakeview Village Foundation.
