Fred was born in WaKeeney, KS on November 8th, 1937, to Fred D. Shaw, Sr., and Theraby (Ridgway) Shaw, both of WaKeeney. He graduated from Trego County High School in 1956, and attended Fort Hays State University and Kansas State University. He married Anna Kay Fitzgerald in 1959, who was also attending KSU. He graduated from KSU in 1960, with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Fred was subsequently hired by DuPont Corporation. He and Kay lived in Lawrence while Fred worked at DuPont’s cellophane plant in Tecumseh. They were later transferred to Wilmington, Delaware in the summer of 1961. While there, both of their daughters were born, Sherlyn in 1962 and Cindy in 1964. While working for DuPont, Fred was named in 5 U.S. patents and 1 Canadian patent, primarily in the area of polymer chemistry (polyurethane foam, etc.). Meanwhile, Fred belonged to 2 investment clubs, and developed a lot of interest in the stock market. When DuPont wanted him to transfer to another part of the country, Fred decided he didn’t want to put his family through a corporate nomad existence. He decided to change careers, and took a job with Paine Webber as a stock broker trainee.
Fred moved his family back to the Midwest, to Overland Park, KS in 1968. Fred spent his first 6 months with Paine Webber being trained in New York, on Wall St. The Shaws have lived in the KC metro area ever since. In 1980, Fred joined the firm of Dain Bosworth and opened their first office in Kansas City. As their Branch Manager, Fred grew the branch to 25 advisors in 2 different offices. Fred was a frequent member of the Dain Chairman’s Council, helping countless families and business owners achieve their financial goals. Fred spent 43 years as a stock broker and financial advisor. His longtime assistant, Clarann Krueger worked with Fred for the last 28 of those years.
Fred was also a very avid golfer. He and Kay were members of Brookridge Country Club for about 10 years. When Shadow Glen Golf Club opened in Olathe in 1989, Fred and Kay became 2 of the earliest members, and built a house in Cedar Creek. Fred was in the first member foursome to play the course, and as a result, momentarily held the course record! Fred collected a bag tag from almost every golf course he ever played. His collection in their basement totaled 148! One his annual goals later in life was to play 100 rounds of golf, which he achieved routinely unless health problems got in the way. Fred scored an amazing 6 holes-in-one over his golf career; 2 at Brookridge and 4 at Shadow Glen!
Fred was also a very philanthropic person. He was a longtime member of the Overland Park Rotary Club, and coordinated their annual charity golf tournament for many years. He also served on the boards of many organizations at various times, including Temporary Lodging for Children, the Overland Park Chamber of Commerce, Brookridge Country Club, Shadow Glen Golf Club, Asbury Methodist Church, Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church and the Kansas Area United Methodist Foundation. In 2008, Fred, Kay, Fred’s sister Marlene and her husband Bill Marsh, started the Shaw Family Scholarship fund, as part of the Trego Community Foundation for Educational Excellence.
Fred’s biggest passion was his family. He loved spending time with family, and the more the merrier. Whether it was grilling out at home, or taking a family vacation, he was always happiest hanging out with Kay, his kids, and grandkids. Fred was a very happy go lucky man, and routinely was the life of the party.
Fred is survived by his wife, Kay, his daughters Sherlyn and Tom Talkington, Prairie Village, and Cindy and Tom Shelby, The Woodlands, TX, sister Marlene Marsh, Wescoesville, PA, nephew Drew and Jane Marsh, Haymarket, VA, niece Diane and Mark Davis, Wading River, NY, grandchildren Jack and Camille Talkington, and Hannah Houske.
