Gary Embrey

Gary M. Embrey, 75, of Prairie Village died on October 5th in his home after a six-year battle with Spinocerebellar Ataxia. Gary was born in Kansas City, Mo. to Aileene Kelly Embrey and Jacques Embrey. Gary met the love of his life, Annette Lindsay, at Sidney’s Drive-In on the Plaza in 1962; they married in 1968. On the day their daughter, Erin, was born in 1972, he started a graphic design business, Gary Embrey Design.

Throughout Gary’s notable career his clients included Hall’s with numerous KC Star sketches and Topsy’s scripted logo. Gary and Annette were co-owners in a gourmet kitchen shop, The Kitchenry, in Crestwood. His American Royal BBQ team, “What’s A Matta You BBQ” won “Grand Champions” in 1987. His passion for culinary arts also included being a restaurant reviewer for The Pitch Magazine. In later years he was a member of The Woodworker’s Guild and The Pastel Society and revived his hobby of classic sports cars.

Gary is survived by his devoted wife, Annette Embrey, daughter, Erin Burvee, and son-in-law, Jeff Burvee, two grandchildren, Hank and Ella, sister, Gayl Reinsch, and brother, Danny Embrey. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jack Embrey.

Services will be held on October 11th at Country Club Christian Church in the Combs Chapel, with visitation at 5:30-6:30 pm and the memorial service at 6:30. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Ataxia Foundation.
