Gary Irvin Schmidt, 62, passed away on February 4, 2011 in Overland Park, KS.
He was born to Irvin W. and Louise (Porter) Schmidt on February 21, 1948 in Bloomington, Illinois. On November 26, 1971 he married Nancy Brown of Beason, IL and two sons were born, Thomas Michael Schmidt and Jeffrey James Schmidt. They divorced in 1991.
Gary was a 1966 graduate of Bloomington High School and received his BA and MA in History from Illinois State University. He taught American History at Bloomington Junior High School for ten years before a career change took him and his family to Chicago where he worked in the Crop Insurance Business. He worked in various positions and moved to Kansas, South Dakota, Minnesota with Rural Crop Insurance Services, before retiring in March 2010.
He enjoyed traveling to historical landmarks, Presidential Museums and civil war sites. He also loved dancing, movies, and reading. Gary had a keen sense of humor and was an animated story teller, as well as an attentive listener. His generosity, kindness and thoughtfulness are traits he has long been known and appreciated for. He was loved and will be missed.
Preceding him in death were his Father, and infant brother and his son, Jeffrey Schmidt. Surviving are his Mother, Louise Schmidt, 1450 Lincoln #204, Louisville, CO.; Son, Thomas Michael Schmidt of Hollywood, CA.; Two sisters and their husbands, Barbara and Sam Wood of Boulder, CO.; Laura and Jeff Glaves of Denver, CO.; Nephew and his wife, James and Alison Rapp, of Westminster, CO.; Niece, Sarah Wood of Boulder, CO. Longtime friend, Richard “Dick” Whitmore, of Overland Park, KS and Ex-wife Nancy White, of Missouri also survive, and numerous Aunts, Uncles and Cousins.
