Gary Lawrence Sloan, age 69, of Overland Park, KS passed away on June 28, 2014 at his home after suffering a heart attack. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 pm on July 2, 2014 at the Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, KS 66210. Funeral services will be at 1 pm on July 3, 2014 at Christ Lutheran Church, 11720 Nieman Rd., Overland Park, KS 66210. Gary was born on February 20, 1945 in Houston, Texas. He spent his childhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin until his family moved to Kansas City, where he attended Rockhurst High School and Center High School.
He received his undergraduate degree and law degrees, JD and Master of Laws, from UMKC. Gary went on to practice law in Olathe, KS from 1979 until his passing.
Gary served in the U.S. Army as a signal corps officer and First Lieutenant in Vietnam. While in the service he was a Sports Information Officer in Saigon.
Gary was a legend in the Kansas City softball community and well-known in softball circles throughout the country. He hit a homerun out of the Royals Stadium in 1980 in a Home Run hitting contest. He continued to play competitive senior softball until his passing.
He was passionate about education and the written word. He lived by softball, Blues, and beer.
He was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend and prodigious mentor. He was loved by many and will be wholeheartedly missed.
Gary was preceded in death by his father, Norman J. Sloan. Survivors include his wife Anna; children Kelly, Bryan, Michelle and Julie; grandchildren Jordan, Taylor and Parker; mother Elizabeth; and siblings Bruce, Norma, Jill and Jan.
