George W. Grothe, 65, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away on Friday, July 17, 2009. A visitation will be held on Monday, July 20th from 2-3 pm at Newcomer’s Johnson County Chapel. A memorial service will follow visitation starting at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to REGAP or your local Veterans Association.
George was a devoted husband to Mary, wonderful brother to Jan & Earl, beloved father to Kent, fun loving grandfather to Andrew & Lauren, uncle and best friend to so many.
He graduated from the University of Nebraska. He was a Husker’s fan, loved playing golf with his buddies, officiating tennis and gardening. He was a Navy pilot and flew for Northwest Airlines for 20 years. He also started his own Custom Furniture Business with his wife Mary and for 10 years they made beautiful furniture for many satisfied customers. His love for pets led to his involvement with rescuing greyhounds and with the rescue group called REGAP. George was also involved with radio control airplanes and a member of Shawnee Mission Radio Control Club and The 95th Flying Group. George was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Edith Mary, and his brother-in-law Irv Deshayes. He is survived by his wife Mary Grothe, son Kent Grothe & wife Kirsten, and their children, Andrew & Lauren Grothe, brother Earl Grothe & wife Colleen, sister Janet Deshayes.
