George Anthony Hallinan
George A. Hallinan, Leawood, KS, passed away Friday, June 12, 2009. He was born in Chicago, IL on May 30, 1922 to Frank and Margaret Hallinan.
George graduated from Lindblom High School in Chicago and a year later, in 1942, enlisted in the Navy Reserve and subsequently in the Naval Air Corps where he served in the Pacific Theater as an aerologist aboard the carrier Chenango. He participated in the battle of Midway and the battle of Leyte Gulf.
Following his discharge, George attended the Illinois Institute of Technology specializing in fire protection and safety engineering. He graduated from IIT in 1950 and accepted a job with the Insurance Department of the Commonwealth of Kentucky as an underwriter and engineer for the state fire and tornado fund. In 1954, he moved to Kansas City to work for R.B. Jones insurance as an engineer. He worked for R.B. Jones for 36 years and retired as a senior vice president. George attained his professional designation as a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter and was very active locally as a chapter member and later president.
One of the things George enjoyed was playing golf. He was a member of Blue Hills Country Club and enjoyed many trips where he was able to play on premier courses in the U.S. and abroad including Pebble Beach, Torrey Pines, and Royal Dornoc in Scotland.
George was a member of the Church of the Nativity. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jeanne F. (Cronin) Hallinan; children Barbara Cooper (Gerry) of Ventura, CA, and Robert Hallinan (Gene Marie) of Lenexa, KS; sister, Mary (Hallinan) Henderson of Oswego, IL; and grandchildren Patrick James Hallinan and Mary Jeanne Hallinan. His parents; sister, Margie; and brothers Frank Jr., Tony, and John preceded him in death.
Visitation will be held at DW Newcomer’s Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 from 6-8 p.m.; a prayer service will be held at 6 p.m. with visitation following. A Rosary will be said that evening at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Church of the Nativity, 3800 W. 119 St., Leawood, KS. Internment following at Resurrection Cemetery.
