Mr. Newsom was born January 13, 1922 in Kansas City, Missouri to Sarah and George T. Newsom, and passed away July 4, 2009. A memorial service will be held at D.W. Newcomer's Johnson County Chapel on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at 6 p.m. The family will greet family and friends at 5:30 p.m. A reception will follow the service at the chapel. A private family burial will be held at a later date. While working for Hallmark Cards, Mr. Newsom met and married the love of his life, Jean A. Berg. Soon after, Mr. Newsom enlisted in the Air Force during WWII becoming a pilot and attaining the rank of Major, retiring after 3 years of active and 36 years of reserve duty. Mr. Newsom worked for Southwestern Bell in Kansas City and Southern Bell in Shreveport, LA, retiring after 38 years. This past February, Buck and Jean celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. Mr. Newsom was an exceptional athlete which led to many years of coaching his son's baseball teams. He was all about family and it showed in the pride he had in his two children. Mr. Newsom was preceded in death by his son George (Buck) Newsom, Jr., his parents, three brothers, and a sister. He leaves behind to mourn his loss; his wife Jean of the home, daughter Barbara Sharp of Overland Park, grandson Randy and wife Staci Sharp of Lenexa, grandson Scott and wife Mandy Sharp of Prairie Village, great-grandson Cameron Sharp, great-granddaughter Jillian Sharp of Lenexa, and great-granddaughter, Maggie Sharp of Prairie Village, many nieces and nephews, with a special thanks to niece Norma Fiehler. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care for all the loving care and assistance they provided during Mr. Newsom's illness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Children's Mercy Hospital to help wipe out childhood cancer.
