George L. Templeton, 97, engineer, missionary, teacher, writer, good Samaritan, explorer, traveler, man of peace, man of God, died Friday, Nov. 3, at Brandon Woods in Lawrence.
George was born in Spearville, Kan., May 15, 1920, son of Frank H. and Gladys Niece Templeton. He joined the Army during WWII as a member of the Signal Corps stationed in Iceland and then married Elva V. Moore in Wichita. He was retired after a long career with Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. that spanned Wichita, Topeka and Overland Park.
Following retirement, George and Elva traveled extensively and served as missionaries for the American Baptist Churches in Kodiak, Alaska, and volunteers at Bacone College in Muskogee, Okla., and Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Shawnee, Kan.
George is survived by his wife, Elva, four sons Gary and his wife Nancy (Brown) of Meriden, Kan., Roger and his wife Karin (Morris) of Santa Monica, Calif., Don and his wife Marina (Fernandez) of Amherst, Mass., and Craig and his wife Debra (Bartsch) of Alexandria, Va., five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and his brother, Marlin S. Templeton of Albuquerque, N.M.
He was preceded in death by his parents, twin sister Loverne Cunningham of Prescott, Ariz., and brother Robert of Bellevue, Wa.
A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017, at the First Baptist Church of Lawrence, 1330 Kasold Dr., Lawrence, KS 66049.
