Gerald C. (Jerry) Magnenat went to be with the Lord on December 29, 2014. Jerry, age 78, was born on October 13, 1936 to Francis (Frank) and Lida (Ivy) Magnenat in Wyandotte County, KS, near 48th and Metropolitan. He attended Chelsea Grade School, Northwest Jr. High School, graduating from Wyandotte High School in 1954, then some years later completed a number of classes at Johnson Co. Community College. He joined the Kansas National Guard in 1955; was called to active duty during the Vietnam conflict in 1968 for 1 ½ years, also served several years of active duty as Training NCO for The Active Guard Reserve. With over 32 years of military service, he retired as First Sergeant from the National Guard in 1987. His many awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Commendation Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (4), and the Good Conduct Medal. His civilian services included Feld Chevrolet Parts Dpt., and later, after attending an electronics school, he worked a number of years in the communications field, followed by 21 years as a civilian employee for the Kansas National Guard, finishing his time of employment serving 11 years at the US Post Office before retiring in 1999.
Jerry was a member of Stilwell Holiness church of the Nazarene, where our God is worshipped and honored, and our friends there share the love He fills in their hearts. He has been a member of NARFE, the 35th Infantry Division Association and The American Legion.
He married his lifelong love, Thelma (Kilgore) Magnenat in 1956. They had two beautiful daughters, Teresa (James) Hamilton and Julie Newport; four grandchildren, Angela (Tim) Bowlin, James (Tanisha) Hamilton, David (Kate) Hamilton, and Kyle Gray, and two Great Grand twins; Marissa and Brendan Bowlin; five more Great Grand Ones; Isaac, Tatyana, Caleb, Alexander and Asher (Hamilton); and siblings, Bill Magnenat (Susanne), Bob Magnenat (Shirley), David Magnenat (Sherry), Ann Sorebo (Eric); and many other family members too numerous to list but certainly loved.
Visitation will be held from 10 am to 11 am Friday, January 2, 2015 at the Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, KS. Funeral services will begin at 11 am. Interment will follow with military honors in the Johnson County Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Stilwell Holiness Church of the Nazarene in Stilwell, KS.
