Gerard William Lewis, 88, of Prairie Village, Kansas passed away peacefully on September 6, 2015 at his home at Sunrise Senior Living. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Thursday, September 10th at Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Kansas. A visitation will be held from 5-7 PM, Wednesday, September 9th also at Johnson County Funeral Chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Johnson County Mental Health.
Mr. Lewis was born August 4, 1927 in Kansas City, Missouri. Jerry bowled in a league with his future father-in-law where he met and married Janice Mae Mary Meinke. They were married at Redemptorist Church on September 18, 1954 and were married one month shy of 56 years when Janice preceded him in death. Janice and Jerry lived in Prairie Village, Kansas where they raised 4 children. Jerry worked for Colgate Palmolive for one year and then on to Farmer’s Insurance Group for 35 years, starting as an underwriter and then becoming a Regional Agent Representative.
He was a Cub Scout Leader and he loved attending all of his children’s sporting events as well as cheering on the Chiefs and Royals. He loved going on road trips, and he did yard work and mowing up into his 80’s. He enjoyed making people laugh and was always a jokester, including being the king of puns. He loved spoiling his 4 grandchildren and he could walk up and talk to anyone, making instant friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Dorothy Lewis; and his 4 siblings, Dot, Looie, Tommy and Alice.
Survivors include his daughter, Julie Lewis; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Roxanne Lewis; son, Jim Lewis; daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Bill Connelly; and grandchildren, Madison Lewis, and Parker, Molly and Lucy Connelly.
