Gertrude Patton

January 24, 1922 — December 30, 2013

Gertrude Dolores Patton, "Gerta," died peacefully December 30, 2013, at a youthful 91years.

"Gerta" was born January 24, 1922, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the youngest of eight children. She was preceded in death by her husband Homer E. Patton. She grew up during the Great Depression in San Francisco, her beloved, "City by the bay."

Gerta loved reminiscing over her days as a professional dancer in San Francisco. During World War II, she danced at the Hollywood Canteen, on battleships and in hospitals, where the sick and wounded were brought in from war zones. Later in life, in her 60's through 80's she took up dancing again, this time in an over-50 group as a hobby. Gerta also kept busy playing duplicate bridge – up to the end, which she said was good exercise for her brain.

Gerta's husband Homer ("Pat") was an international labor leader whose career took them all over the world where they had the opportunity to meet with top government officials, including Prime Minister, Golda Meier and David Ben Gurion. Through his friendship with President Truman and other Presidents, they were invited to many inaugural festivities. This was quite a change for Gerta who as a child was thought of as "the little poor girl" in her neighborhood.

Survivors include daughters, Sandra Linson and husband, John; Sharon Rivera and husband, Lou, seven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend who will be greatly missed. She will be remembered for her smile, love of laughter, strength of character, and eternally youthful spirit.

The family would like to express their thanks to the caregivers at Kansas City Hospice House, angels disguised as people. They also wish to thank family and friends who provided heartfelt love and support during Gerta's final days.

A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, January 11, 2014, at Village Church, 6641 Mission Rd, Prairie Village, KS. Inurnment will be private for immediate family

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO 64145.
