Gloria Patton Steele

1925 – 2018 (age 93)

Gloria Patton Steele passed away October 17, 2018 surrounded by her family.  She was born July 6, 1925 in Atlanta, Georgia to Eloise Hall Patton and Elbert Earl Patton.  While attending the University of Georgia she met her future husband, James Ralph Steele, Jr. from Overland Park,  Kansas.  Upon his return from duty as a naval fighter pilot in the South Pacific, they were married.  After the war, they returned to Jim’s home state of Kansas where they lived in Prairie Village and Mission Hills.  She and Jim joined the Village Presbyterian Church in 1952.  Gloria was a member of PEO, Chapter GZ.  Gloria worked part-time in the silver gallery at Hall’s on the Plaza for 27 years.  Upon retiring, Gloria and Jim enjoyed ten years living in Bonita Springs, Florida before his death in 2001.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James R Steele, Jr.; her parents; sister, Rosemary Mann; brother, Earl Patton; and her daughter, Rosemary Evans.  Gloria is survived by her daughter, Patricia Longan and husband Woody; her son, James R Steele III and wife Marcia; her son, Douglas P. Steele and wife Karen.  Ten grandchildren:  Shannon Brooks and husband, Evan of Denver, Co.; Ryan Evans, Prairie Village, KS; Heather White and husband, Rod of Atlanta, GA.; Grant Weidman and wife Rebecca of Prairie Village, KS.; Spencer Weidman and wife Kristen of Broomfield, CO.;  Lindsay Mangum and husband Nat of Boerne, TX.; Justin Foutes and wife Kate of Atlanta, GA.; Jerrod Foutes and wife Sunny of Leawood, KS.; Daniel Steele of Prairie Village, KS; Travis Steele of Olathe, KS; Fourteen great grandchildren:  Wyatt and Georgia Brooks of Denver, CO.; Harper and Jordan and Alexander White of Atlanta, GA.; Harlan, Steele Marie and Branch Mangum of Boerne, TX.;  Emma Weidman of Prairie Village, KS.; Carson and Vance Weidman of Broomfield, CO.; Marleigh and Miles Foutes of Leawood, KS., and Rowan Steele of Olathe, KS..  Also surviving her are her sister in laws, Ruth Brookfield of Denver, CO. and Mary Patton of Atlanta, GA., and many loving nieces and nephews along with friends in Kansas, Georgia and Florida.  Jim and Gloria felt the greatest thing they would be leaving behind would be the close-knit, loving family that made them so proud.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 3rd  at Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS. 66208 at 3:00 p. m..  There will be a private family burial at Johnson County Memorial Gardens.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Village Church Food Pantry, 9900 Mission Road, Overland Park, KS. 66207 or Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO. 64145
