Gloria Jean Yerkes
Gloria Jean Yerkes, 74, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 11, 2016 in Overland Park, Kansas, surrounded by her loving family. Born March 16, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois to John and Edith McAvoy, Gloria graduated in 1960 from Shawnee Mission North High School and in 1964 from Kansas State University, where she met her beloved husband, David. They married on May 30, 1964 at Danforth Chapel, and spent a lifetime raising three children overseas in Madrid, Spain and Melbourne, Australia. She later partnered with her husband and her brother, Bill McAvoy to run M-Y Foods in Kansas City, Missouri. Gloria’s deepest passions were her family, especially her eight grandchildren; her cooking, which filled the house with joy; and her home, in which she hosted the friends and family she loved. She enjoyed long walks with her shitzus, Coco and Libby. We will cherish and sorely miss her warm smile and generous spirit. She is remembered with love by her family: David Yerkes, Margaret and Ed Killeen, John and Christine Yerkes, Tricia and Brian Beaman; her grandchildren: Ben, Sophie and Emmett Killeen, Alex and Ava Yerkes, Logan, Quinn and Savannah Beaman; and her brother and his wife, Bill and Donna McAvoy. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 15 at 1pm at United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, Wesley Chapel.
