Gordon was born in Chattanooga, TN to parents Gordon Lee Haynes, Sr. and Frances Elizabeth Woodard. He graduated from Central High School in Chattanooga. Gordon played trumpet in high school and college and was an Eagle Scout. He attended Harvard University and received his B.S. in Engineering and Applied Physics. Gordon, a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1966, served on the USS Robert L. Wilson and was in the Cuban Missile Crisis. Gordon married Cynthia Gail MacLeod June 15, 1963. He received his M.S. in Operations Research from UT. Gordon moved to Kansas in 1969 and was employed by Hallmark Cards for 26 years. He received his M.A. in Counseling Psychology from Avila College in 1997. In his retirement years Gordon worked at Yellow Freight. He completed Spiritual Direction Certification at Mount Saint Scholastica in Atchison, KS. A member of Prairie Baptist Church since 1969, he served on multiple boards and committees. He provided leadership in spiritual direction small groups and Taize services.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 51 years, Cynthia, his son David Gordon Haynes and wife Kristine, daughter Jennifer Lynn Isadore and husband Michael, grandchildren; Josiah, Aubrey, and Nathaniel Haynes. He is also survived by his brother James Woodard Haynes and wife Betty, nephew Jason and numerous nieces, nephews and their children.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 from 6 to 8 pm at the Johnson County Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be at 11 am on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at Prairie Baptist Church, 7416 Roe Ave, Prairie Village, KS. Interment to follow in the Johnson County Memorial Gardens.
