Grace Keltner

January 8, 1911 — September 18, 2007

Grace Magill Keltner, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on September 18, 2007, at Delmar Gardens of Overland Park, after a brief illness.

She was 96. She had been blessed with a long and healthy life. Grace was born in Atchison, Kan., on January 8, 1911, to John and Mary Magill. She was the seventh of 10 children. Her father was a railroader and the family lived in Kansas, Nebraska and South Dakota before settling in Hoisington, Kan., where Grace graduated from high school and met and married Chester W. Keltner in 1931. Grace and Chet moved to Kansas City in 1939 and together founded Keltner Statistical Service, a commodity market research and publishing firm. Grace served as secretary of the firm until she retired in 1982. Grace was devoted to her family and friends, and she and Chet shared many common interests. They loved the Kansas City Chiefs and spent many a Sunday at old Municipal Stadium and Arrowhead, with at least two of their four beloved grandchildren at their sides. They also enjoyed bowling, playing golf and traveling together. And both became accomplished oil painters, spending hours painting together in their home studio. Grace was one of those people who was very gifted and talented, excelling at whatever she tried. She was an accomplished cook and seamstress. Never having had a lesson, she played the piano beautifully. She took up golf in her 40s and soon became the women's 18hole champion at Milburn Golf and Country Club. Both her oil paintings and needlepoint creations are exceptional. A member of Old Mission United Methodist Church, she was very active in the church and in volunteer activities throughout the Kansas City community. After the loss of Chet in 1998, Grace's ever present and loyal companion was her special Yorkshire Terrier, "Timmie".

Grace was preceded in death by her husband Chester and a granddaughter, Betsi Brooks Krumm. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Cheri and Robert Brooks, Jr., Olathe, Kan.; three grandchildren and their spouses, Robert "Bucky" Brooks III and Beverly, Staci Brooks Tate and Blair, all of Kansas City, and Mindi Brooks Woodson and Jim, Castle Rock, Colo., and 13 great grandchildren, Claire, Caffrey, Caroline, Davis and Catherine Brooks; Brooks, Logan, Skyler and Corey Tate; Libby and BetsiKate Woodson, and Mackenzie and Kennedy Krumm, who will all miss "Grandma."

Visitation will be 2-3 p.m. Friday, September 21, 2007, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park; services to follow at 3 p.m. The family requests no flowers and suggests contributions to the Betsi Brooks Krumm Memorial Fund at the Barstow School, 11511 State Line Road, Kansas City, MO 64114, or Old Mission United Methodist Church, 5519 State Park Road, Fairway, KS 66205.
