HARLAN L. LONG
Harlan Lee Long, age 81, of Overland Park, Kansas, formerly of Prairie Village, Kansas, passed away at Delmar Gardens of Lenexa on Saturday, March 26, 2011. Harlan was born July 7, 1929 in Emporia, Kansas to Samuel and Nile Long. He graduated from Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia in May of 1951 and obtained his law degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City (UMKC) in May of 1959.
He practiced law in Johnson County, Kansas for over 40 years, retiring in 2008.
He was married to Helen Virginia McKean in 1958.
Harlan was a member of the Johnson County and Kansas Bar Associations, as well as the first President (1994-1995) of the Friends of the Linda Hall Library at UMKC. Harlan was a past Councilman with the City of Prairie Village, Kansas spanning two decades and served on the Board of Directors of the Corinth Optimist Club. He had many hobbies that he was very passionate about including; gardening, wild mushroom hunting, reading, sailing, and the studies of Hieroglyphics.
Harlan is survived by his three sons; David Long (Perri Lampe) of Prairie Village, Kansas; Christopher Long (Kimberly) of Castle Rock, Colorado; and Steven Long of Whittier, California as well as his three grandchildren; Duri Long, Jarred Long and Hayleigh Long and Harlan's brother, (Samuel) Lowell Long of Topeka, Kansas.
Harlan was preceded in death by his long time companion, Irene Smith of Overland Park, Kansas.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 28, 2011 from 5:00PM-7:00PM at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, Kansas. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 10:00AM CDT also at the chapel.
