HAROLD ALAN COLEMAN, "AL", 85, Leawood, KS died November 26, 2012.
Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012 at Southridge Presbyterian Church, 5015 Buena Vista Drive, Roeland Park, KS 66205. A memorial service will follow at 3:00 p.m.. He was born June 27, 1927 on a farm near Hoyt, Kansas the son of Noel E. and Mabel E. (Lyon) Coleman and the great grandson of the Kansas pioneers, George and Elizabeth (Voice) Coleman.
He attended a one room school, North Star, and graduated from Horton High School 1945. He served as Fireman Second Class in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during W.W. II. After the war he attended Kansas State University where he received a degree in Electrical Engineering.
Al moved to Wichita, KS to work for The Mill Mutuals as a Field Representative in the southwest region. After forty years, Al retired, as Regional Vice President and Manager in Kansas City.
He was united in marriage to Susan Thomas on June 14, 1952 in Des Moines, IA. They shared over sixty years of marriage. From this union, three children were born, Carolyn, Thomas and David.
Al was a fifty-two year member of Southridge Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon and Elder and helped organize Crop Walks; a Past-President of the Kansas City Chapter of the Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriters; a Volunteer Fireman at Wichita, KS; he was a member of the Shawnee Mission Radio Control Club; Past-President of the Shepherd's Center of Shawnee Mission; he was a board member of Services for Seniors, which established the current system for Senior Meals.
He enjoyed traveling to North and Central America, Europe, Asia, Africa and New Zealand; he especially enjoyed bowling with his team, The Top Dogs. He was a great Do-it-Yourselfer and he was an early proponent of physical fitness, and a runner for more than forty years.
Mr. Coleman was preceded in death by his parents; his infant son, David; and a brother, Roy Coleman.
Survivors include his wife, Susan; a daughter, Carolyn Coleman and her husband, Dave Van Hee of Lawrence, KS; a son, Thomas Coleman and his wife, Janet of Tulsa, OK; three grandchildren, Noelle, Marie and Rachel; two step-grandchildren, Dawn and Alita; two sisters, Ruth Kennedy and her husband, Tom of Topeka, KS and Marilyn Coleman and her husband, Lawrence Ganong of Columbia, MO; many nieces, nephews; and his Church Family.
