Harold Robert (Bob) Olson, age 93. Leawood (formerly of Hanover Park, IL and Bloomington, IL) passed away on July 25, 2015 at Kansas City Hospice House from natural causes.
Bob was born on October 21, 1921 in Aurora, IL, to John and Alma Olson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; son, Bobby; sister, Alice; and his parents. Survivors include daughters, Lynda (Steve) Robertson of Leawood and Nancy Olson of Schaumburg, IL; grandchildren Bryan and Jillian Olson, Devon (Marshall) Cheek, and Taylor Robertson; and great granddaughters Leah and Adalynn Cheek; daughter-in-law, Melanie Olson Clegg, numerous nieces and nephews, and his beloved cat, Socks.
Bob truly lived a life centered on faith, family and friends. He met his future wife, Pat, while attending Bloomington High School and they married immediately following his return from service in World War II. He had enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific during World War II and made lifelong friendships with his fellow squadron members of the VMB-423. Bob planned his vacations around the squadron’s reunions each fall and looked forward to reconnecting with his lifelong comrades and their families. A few years ago, Bob was thrilled to participate in an Honor Flight to Washington, DC where he was honored for his service during World War II and was amazed at the outpouring of gratitude at every stop along the way during that special day. Bob had a deep faith in God that he instilled in his children. Just as his father had before him, Bob served his faith and several of his churches as a member of the Church Council and as treasurer. After moving to Chicago early in their marriage, Bob and Pat raised three children and have left a legacy of love and laughter. Bob was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Bears and a proud season ticket holder for almost 30 years. He was a diehard fan of the Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees, and since his move to Leawood 10 years ago, the KC Royals, and he enjoyed taking his kids and grandkids to games. As a long-time fan of Coach Bill Self while he was at the University of Illinois and subsequently the University of Kansas, Bob was thrilled to attend a KU game on Senior Night a few years back. He loved to travel, play golf, listen to swing music and watch almost any sport on TV. He loved his vanilla milkshakes from McDonald’s, Hershey miniatures, Miller Lite beer, and his beautiful rose gardens. He was fun-loving and had a great smile.
Services will be held Thursday, July 30th at 11:00am at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Overland Park, KS. Interment will be private.
We want to thank the doctors, nurses, and KC Hospice staff who made smooth the road of his final journey here on Earth. Memorial contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Road, KCMO 64145.
He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. But rather than mourn the absence of the flame, let us celebrate how brightly it glowed! Semper Fi!
