Harry McCarl, Jr.

Harry Berwyn McCarl, 87, passed away on Thursday, February 14, 2013.
Harry was born on December 22, 1925, in Mankato, Minnesota, to Harry and Ida (Krogstad) McCarl. He was educated in Mankato schools and graduated from Iowa State University in 1947 with a Bachelors in Chemical Engineering. He received a Masters degree in Chemical Engineering in 1950 from Case University in Cleveland, Ohio, and received an Associate degree in Criminal Justice in 1970 from University of Nebraska at Omaha. He was employed by Bailey Meter Company, Gibbs & Hill Engineers in Omaha, and Black & Veatch in Overland Park before retiring.
While living in Omaha he worked with the Douglas County reserve for several years. Harry enjoyed serving in the Overland Park Police Department as a reserve officer for 18 years, working weekly with the same partner. In addition to his police work, his interests included traveling and working on automobiles.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Matthew McCarl. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Ellen; four children, Deborah (Marilyn Skurdahl) of St Cloud MN, H. Scott (Carolyn) of Santa Barbara CA, Jeffrey (Saundra) of Murrieta, CA and Andrew (Leesa Whitson) of Stanley KS; ten grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
In addition, he is mourned internationally by six former AFS students from New Zealand, Costa Rica, Portugal, Canada, Germany and Hong Kong. Each lived a year with the family and attended Shawnee Mission South between 1980 and 1996. Harry enjoyed visiting each family several times in the years since they returned to their countries.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 23, 2013, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons – Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS 66210. Family will greet friends an hour prior to the service.
